Zavitzianos, Markos (1884 Istanbul - 1923 Geneva) Στο πιάνο
Zavitzianos, Markos (1884 Istanbul - 1923 Geneva) Of Corfiot descent, he graduated from the Phanar Greek Orthodox College. His interest in painting was manifest from a very young age, possibly due to the influence of his mother who was an amateur painter. In 1903 he went to Munich and in 1906 he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied painting under G. von Hackl and engraving possibly at the studio of M. Kern. While in Germany, he became friends with Konstantinos Theotokis and was introduced to the ideas of socialism. In 1909 he participated in the founding of the Socialist Democratic Union, while he also published his socialist-content study “Human Perceptions” in Noumas magazine. That same year he travelled to Paris and, the following year, he returned to Corfu where, along with K. Theotokis, he set up the Socialist Center of Corfu. In 1914, he took part in establishing the literary and artistic group "Company of Nine", at the same time publishing poems, drawings and prints in the group's magazine, called Corfiot Anthology. Prior to 1912, he had already started to illustrate short stories written by K. Theotokis, of which only one was published at the time: "I timi kai to chrima" (Price/Honor and Money) (1914). His prints, consisting mainly of chalcographies, most of which were intended for book illustrations, moves along the lines of a realistic concept, while his paintings, which include landscapes, interiors and portraits, manifest his acquaintance with the impressionist and post-impressionist trends.
