The center of the market, the Piazza (piazza = square, market), is also called Pinia (>pino = pine) as there once was a large pine tree there. In memoriam of this tree, the locals placed a metal pine cone, approximately double the size of a usual one, that can be seen hanging from a building at the intersection of Nikiforou Theotoki and Philharmonic Streets. The origin of the story of the hanging pine cone is hard to trace back in time. Three more pine cones – these ones made of stone – are walled in in adjoining buildings. The area of the Pinia is covered with black lava rock slabs from Mount Vesuvius.
