Twelve kilometers south of Corfu Town is the picturesque fishing village of Benitses. The name Benitses is first found in an archive document dating from 1469. It is possible that the name derives from the water sources that spring from the limestone rocks in the mountains of Agioi Deka and Stavros and become two small rivers, Pinitses-Benitses. Recent archaeological excavations have brought to light ruins of a Roman hot baths complex, in relatively good condition, while we know that many watermills operated in the mountainous section of the village. There are testimonies of about twenty-two operating watermills at the beginning of the 19th century. Residents formerly were occupied mainly with fishing and agriculture, while in recent years tourism has been particularly well developed.
