To the south of the peninsula of Palaiopolis is the enchanting site Kanoni. Its name is said to have prevailed after the French installed an artillery battery there in 1798. One of the cannons of the artillery corps is still extant. Below this spot lies the monastery of Vlacherna (17th c.), built on a rock in the water and linked to the land by a small bridge constructed in the shallow waters of the Chalikiopoulos lagoon. Once by the waterfront, one may visit the islet Pontikonissi, featuring the picturesque chapel of Pantokratoras, a temple built in the 11th or 12th century.
