Originally from the island of Kefalonia, Vegias trained alongside sculptor Prossalentis and then in Rome. His studies in Italy and his copying works of the Renaissance influenced his work decisively, in terms of both color selection—with his harmonious contrasts—and style, featuring an emphasis on the effects of light and a descriptive rendering of his subjects.
