In 1838 the Mental Asylum was founded (then Public Mental Health Hospital and later Psychiatric Hospital of Corfu), which was the first Greek psychiatric hospital in which mental patients from all over the country were hospitalized. Starting in the nineties things changed with the de-hospitalization of all chronic cases who were gradually incorporated into society. Part of the facilities were donated to the Ionian University.
