The Annunziata (Evangelistria), was a Catholic church dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The Holy Church of Evangelistria was built in the late 14th century by captain Petrus Capece, who in 1394 was granted permission to build outside the Borgo Corfu, a monastery intended for the monks of the Order of St Augustine. The facade was simple, with the characteristic oculum and a small stone staircase, while a very distinctive characteristic is its bell tower. There is evidence that the interior was decorated with ample sculptures and tombstones bearing coats of arms and inscriptions on them. Actually, the church was so important at the time that the relics of Catholics who were killed in the Battle of Lepanto (1571) were kept inside it. This historic monument burned down during the bombing of the area by the Nazis on 14 September 1943 and the remains were demolished in the 1950s by the then municipal authority. Today, only the belfry survives in the center of the old town of Corfu.
