Vegias or Vegios, Dionysios (1810 Aktion - 1884 Corfu)
His first teacher was Pavlos Prossalentis the Elder. He continued his studies in painting at the Academy of Saint Luke in Rome, where he was awarded first prize. He travelled to Florence and took on copying of Renaissance works. Upon returning to Corfu in 1839, he taught black-and-white drawing at the school of Pavlos Prossalentis, while he also took to engraving/printmaking. He participated in the international exhibition of London in 1862 and Olympia in 1875. Parallel to secular painting, he also took on religious painting and engraving. His themes comprise mostly portraits and historical scenes. His painting leverages various types of 19th-century Italian painting and is distinguished for its idealistic nature.
Originally from the island of Kefalonia, Vegias trained alongside sculptor Prossalentis and then in Rome. His studies in Italy and his copying works of the Renaissance influenced his work decisively, in terms of both color selection—with his harmonious contrasts—and style, featuring an emphasis on the effects of light and a descriptive rendering of his subjects.
