The tallest mountain of Corfu, Pantokratoras, is located in the northeastern part of the island. It is 906 meters high and from its peak visitors enjoy unique views of the entire island, a large part of the nearby Albanian coast, the Diapontia islands to the north, even the island of Paxoi to the south, when the weather is clear. Its current name derives from the same-name monastery built almost at the top of the mountain in 1347. The present church is a restored form of the old structure that was built in the 17th century. The church is a single-space arched-roof structure and is surrounded by annexes added to the north and south side. Remarkable murals from both the 14th and the 17th centuries survive on the walls of the church. Furthermore, there are many Ionian-style icons and wonderful silver ecclesiastical items. The Monastery of High Pantokratoras, as it is called, celebrates on the the 6th of August, the celebration of the Metamorphosis (Transfiguration) of Christ.
There are dozens of beautiful villages on the mountain of Pantokratoras, including Episkepsi in the west, the old Perithia village, one of the oldest villages in Corfu and an architectural jewel of the island, where many of the stone houses have been renovated in recent years. Pantokratoras is a mountain of extraordinary beauty and an area renowned for its charming hiking trails and paths.
