Alamanos, Spyros (1947 Corfu - 2011 Corfu)
He studied painting at the Corfu School of Fine Arts and the Athenian Technological Institute (ATI). He taught at the Corfu School of Fine Arts, which also served as the primary venue for his exhibition activity. He presented his first solo exhibition in 1971 at the Corfu Reading Society. In 1993, a retrospective of his works was held at the Corfu Branch of the Greek National Gallery. He took part in the 1975 Panhellenic Exhibition as well as in other group exhibits. He was mainly concerned with the human form, which he distorted and placed in a surrealistic atmosphere. His work combines surrealist ambiance with expressionist distortion. His compositions are distinguished for their dreamlike nature.
Poised between surrealism and naïve art, Alamanos places his Clown within an imaginary landscape, which, however, is inspired by the morphology of Corfu. Following in this particular work the stylistic principles of French naïve painter Henri "Le Douanier" (the customs officer) Rousseau, Alamanos renders space in a symbolic and mocking manner, huddling together the Greek tradition with the flag and the rustic clothes of the scarecrow, on one hand, and the modern world with the road signs, on the other.
