Hailing from the island of Kefalonia, Georgios Avlichos, the creator of this masterpiece, was a poet, musician and painter, who trained in Italy and completely escaped the tradition of academism of his time. The atmosphere of his works features a poetic, even otherworldly, element, an almost metaphysical dimension, which foreshadows the works by De Chirico and Balthus, a modern painter. Another feature that distinguishes Avlichos from his peers of the same time is that he avoids the brownish asphaltum used by the academics and paints with clean and bright colors.
